Rainbow Dragons Abreast were formed in 2004. Our members come from all over northern NSW including Lismore, Ballina, Ocean Shores as well as Byron Bay. This area is sometimes known as the Rainbow Region, hence our name.

We have grown to over 50 members, half breast cancer survivors and half supporters. We paddle Sunday mornings at 8am and Thursdays at 5pm, on Lake Ainsworth Lennox Head, which is between Ballina and Byron Bay.

We enter several regattas each year, travelling to Grafton, Currumbin, Port Macquarie and Sydney.

Five members of Rainbow Dragons Abreast competed in the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast on the 7th & 8th of November. We joined with women from Maclean, Mackay and Brisbane to form a boat. Our newest sweep, Debbie, completed her Level 3 Sweeps Accreditation by sweeping in two races and our coach picked up some new coaching ideas to bring back to the Rainbow Dragons Abreast.

At the moment we are training hard for Chinese New Year regatta in Sydney where we will be competing in races on Saturday and Sunday.

Sometimes we tow our boat to a local river. Recently we paddled down the Richmond and Brunswick Rivers which is a beautiful and fun thing to do.

On Sunday 16th November we celebrated the 10th birthday of Dragons Abreast Australia with cake and champers after paddling.

On December 7th we had heaps of laughs at the Fun Day hosted by Gold Coast Dragons – lovely food and hilarious games to play. Our own Sue Halvorsen excelled in the handbag throwing event.

Recently we gathered at Lake Ainsworth for our Christmas celebrations, decked out in lights and things that glow in the dark. It was too wet to paddle but not too wet for silly games and lovely food and champagne (again!).
